Escape with us to the island of Sumatra and enjoy a trek on elephant back through the beautiful forests of Gunung Leseur National Park before finally arriving at Bukit Lawang, home of the endangered orang-utan.

On the drive to Tangkahan, you will visit local markets and be greeted by the hospitable Karonese people, well-known for chewing betel nut, their regal dancing, and large marriage ceremonies. Tangkahan is an inspiring example of community-based ecotourism, where former illegal loggers are gaining their livelihoods from the beauty of the forest.

Over the next few days, you will watch the elephants bathing and socialising. You will trek on elephant-back to Buluh River where you will enjoy picnic lunches followed by swimming in waterfalls and hot springs. At Bukit Lawang, you will experience a whole different landscape as you trek through the jungle to view the orang-utans in their natural habitat. These magnificent creatures are critically endangered, with approximately 6000 of them in the wild.

This tour is a great introduction to the amazing jungles of North Sumatra, the majestic Sumatran elephant, and the captivating orang-utan.
