Mark Keenan

Mark Keenan trains Australian Fur Seals at Melbourne Zoo. He also researches marine ecosystems and Southern Ocean endemic species, a role which enables him to pursue his love of scuba diving and underwater photography. Previous roles have included working at the Zoo’s Orangutan in the Trail of the Elephants Precinct. He has also worked at the Melbourne Aquarium as a visitor education officer focusing on the ecology of the Southern Ocean and the need to protect this complex ecosystem.

Mark loves getting off the beaten track to explore and experience nature. Armed with a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management) from Deakin University, Mark’s aim has always been to pursue a career in conservation and to promote community awareness of environmental issues facing Southeast Asia. His passion for orang-utans has led to an involvement with organisations that raise public awareness of the plight of these intelligent primates and conserve their habitats.

In 2009, he accompanied Jessica McKelson to Tangkahan and assisted with organising a tour group and interpreting conservation and cultural issues that affect the region. Having observed the devastating effects of habitat destruction on indigenous animal populations, he worked with the local community to develop practical ways of achieving sustainable ecotourism and habitat protection.
